What are school based arrangements?

Part-time traineeships in schools provide senior secondary students with three qualifications:

  • a nationally recognised VET qualification under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF)
  • a Certificate of Proficiency on satisfactory completion of the traineeship
  • credit toward the Higher School Certificate (HSC).

The NSW Department of Education and Training, the Catholic Education Commission and the Association of Independent Schools support the implementation of part-time traineeship arrangements that provide high quality and equitable training outcomes. These guidelines reflect the policy structure for VET across Australia. It contributes to the reforms of the HSC and the implementation of the National Training Framework.

While this information is designed for use by school personnel, it also provides useful information for Departmental staff, group training companies and other agencies who will assist students in meeting all requirements of the traineeship and the HSC.

An important change in these guidelines is the inclusion of part-time traineeships in government schools in the NSW Training Market Tender process. Private and community registered training organisations are invited to tender for inclusion on the Approved Providers List. TAFE NSW and NSW government schools are funded under separate arrangements.

For further information on completing a traineeship as part of your Higher School Certificate (HSC) can be obtained from the School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships in NSW website: http://www.sbatinnsw.info/
