Frequently Asked Questions

Probationary Periods

Q1 ) How are part-time probationary periods calculated?

A1 ) They are not calculated any differently to those for equivalent full-time traineeship. If the probationary period is one month for a full-time traineeship then it is one month for the same traineeship on a part-time basis.

Q2 ) When a re-establishment of an apprenticeship/traineeship occurs, is the probationary period pro-rata?

A2 ) No. A re-establishment is subject to the same probationary period as a new establishment. The new Training Contract will have the same probationary period as per the nominal term of training specified in the relevant Vocational Training Order and guideline.

For example, if an apprenticeship with a nominal four-year term and a specified three-month probationary period is re-established with four months of the term remaining to be served, three of those months will be on probation.
