Surveying - Traineeship

The traineeship vocation of Surveying has been established.

Qualifications, structure and packaging

CPP07 Property Services Training Package includes 27 qualifications ranging from Certificate I to Advanced Diploma. The qualifications cover the four sectors of:

  • spatial information services
  • property development, sales and management
  • security
  • access consulting.

There are two qualifications in the spatial information services group which support surveying traineeship pathways. Their details are below:

Industrial arrangements

Applications to establish traineeships will not be approved unless the Commissioner for Vocational Training is satisfied that appropriate industrial arrangements are in place.

Surveying trainees can be employed under the following awards:

  • Surveyors Field Hands (NSW) State Award or the notional agreement preserving a state award - NAPSA
  • Draughting Employees, Planners, Technical Employees &c, (State) Award.

The industrial arrangements provide for part-time training.

Registered training organisations

For registered training providers which can deliver the traineeship qualifications go to National Training Information Service.

For organisations which are in contract with the NSW Department of Education and Training to be paid for the delivery of traineeship training go to each of the qualifications below:

Payment for the delivery of training for the CPP50207 Diploma of Surveying traineeship will be considered on a case by case basis. Submissions must be made to the NSW Department of Education and Training by the Construction Industry Training Advisory Body on behalf of the surveying industry. Learning resources and assessment materials

Support materials that are required to deliver the qualifications are being developed by a national registered training network that is supported by the Construction and Property Services Industry Skills Council.

Job descriptions

Surveying is about the measurement, management, analysis and display of spatial information to describe the earth, its physical features and the built environment.

Graduates could work in land management, civil and structural engineering, asset management for local government or mining companies or helping police at crime scenes.

Certificate IV trainees will learn to:

  • operate surveying equipment
  • collect and set out survey data
  • maintain and edit survey data
  • survey computations
  • validate, store and retrieve spatial data
  • manage database systems
  • plan and conduct survey expeditions.

Diploma trainees will learn land and planning law and how to:

  • create engineering drawings
  • design subdivision and control surveys
  • calculate advanced survey computations
  • design road and railways
  • plan spatial data collection and validation
  • produce maps for land management purposes
  • undertake survey field expeditions.

  • CPP40107 Certificate IV In Surveying
  • CPP50107 Diploma of Surveying
Terms of training

Full time:

  • CPP40107 Certificate IV In Surveying
    • 18 months or until the relevant competencies are achieved
  • CPP50107 Diploma of Surveying - direct entry
    • 36 months or until the relevant competencies are achieved
  • CPP50107 Diploma of Surveying - where the trainee holds CPP30107 Certificate III in Spatial Information Services
    • 30 months or until the relevant competencies are achieved
  • CPP50107 Diploma of Surveying - where the trainee holds CPP40107 Certificate IV In Surveying
    • 30 months or until the relevant competencies are achieved

Part-time:

Probationary periods

Where the nominal term is:

  • 12 -24 months the probationary period is 2 months
  • 24 - 36 months the probationary period is 3 months
