Retail Services - Establishment of traineeship vocations

The Commissioner for Vocational Training (Commissioner), in consultation with the NSW Wholesale, Retail and Personal Services Industry Training Advisory Body has replaced the existing traineeship vocation of Retail Operations with the new traineeship vocations of:

  • Retail Services
  • Retail Services (Certificate II/Certificate III combined)

The Commissioner has made Vocational Training Orders (VTOs) for the new vocations. The VTOs contain qualifications from the SIR07 Retail Services Training Package.

The VTOs specify a number of matters including the terms of training, probationary periods, competency outcomes and courses of study to be undertaken.

A copy of the VTOs supporting the traineeship vocations is at Attachment A.

Note: The Retail Services (Certificate II/Certificate III combined) traineeship is available for existing workers only.

SIR07 Retail Services Training Package

SIR07 integrates three previous Training Packages: WRR02 Retail Training Package, WRW01 Wholesale Training Package and WRP02 Community Pharmacy Training Package.

Qualifications

For the purpose of the revised VTO, Retail Services trainees in New South Wales will now be able to gain the following qualifications:

  • SIR20207 Certificate II in Retail
  • *SIR30207 Certificate III in Retail
  • **SIR20207 Certificate II in Retail combined with SIR30207 Certificate III in Retail
  • SIR40207 Certificate IV in Retail Management
  • ZWA20104 Certificate II in Store Operations (Woolworths Supermarkets)
  • ZWA20204 Certificate II in Store Operations (Consumer Electronics)
  • ZWA20305 Certificate II in Store Operations (Big W)
  • ZWA20405 Certificate II in Store Operations (Freestanding Liquor)
  • ZWA20604 Certificate II in Buying and Marketing (Woolworths Limited)
  • ZWA30105 Certificate III in Store Operations (Woolworths Supermarkets)
  • ZWA30205 Certificate III in Store Operations (Consumer Electronics)
  • ZWA30305 Certificate III in Store Operations (Big W)
  • ZWA30405 Certificate III in Store Operations (Freestanding Liquor)
  • ZWA30605 Certificate III in Buying and Marketing (Woolworths Limited)
  • ZWA40105 Certificate IV in Retail Management (Woolworths Supermarkets)
  • ZWA40205 Certificate IV in Retail Management (Consumer Electronics)
  • ZWA40305 Certificate IV in Retail Management (Big W)
  • ZWA40405 Certificate IV in Retail Management (Freestanding Liquor)
  • ZWA40605Certificate IV in Buying and Marketing (Woolworths Limited).

SIR07 Retail Services Training Package

The packaging and structure requirements for qualifications that apply to these VTOs apply are outlined at Attachment B.

ZWA04 Woolworths Training Package

The Woolworths Training Package includes 23 qualifications that range from Certificate II to Diploma. The units of competency have been designed to accommodate new and future skill needs.

Job descriptions – SIR07 Retail Services Training Package qualifications

These traineeships are for people seeking to work in retail sales and service (junior), retail operations and/or supervision (intermediate) and retail management (senior).

Certificate II trainees will learn to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers, apply safe working practices and perform stock control and point-of-sale procedures. Trainees will also learn theft minimisation, retail technology operations and how to organise and maintain work areas.

Certificate III trainees will learn to maintain store safety and security and build relationships with customers. Trainees may also elect to study business management, sales and product knowledge.

Certificate IV trainees will learn to work in first line management in the retail and/or wholesale industries. Their core training will involve managing merchandise, giving store presentations, leading and managing people and providing a safe working environment. Trainees may also study management, inventory, merchandising and sales at an elective level.

Industrial arrangements

Applications under the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Act 2001 to establish any apprenticeship or traineeship will not be approved unless the Commissioner for Vocational Training is satisfied that appropriate industrial arrangements are in place.

Industrial arrangements under which Retail Services trainees can be employed are listed at Attachment C.

School based apprenticeships and traineeships

The NSW Wholesale, Retail and Personal Services Industry Training Advisory Body has recommended SIR20207 Certificate II in Retail as suitable for delivery as a school based part-time traineeship.

Retail Services (Certificate II/Certificate III combined) is not recommended as suitable for delivery in schools.

SIR07 Retail Services Training Package

Other companies like Aspire Training and Consultancy also offer a comprehensive range of resources for the Retail qualifications.

ZWA04 Woolworths Training Package
All non-endorsed components have been developed by the Corporate Learning and Development Department within Woolworths Limited and are all currently available to support the new arrangements. Trainers and assessors are able to access these materials through the company printer in hard copy and on the company intranet in soft copy.

Materials are available in hard copy through the company's designated printing company and in soft copy on the company intranet. All forms and procedures for the management and administration of traineeships are also available on the company intranet and are accessible to all staff involved with training and assessment within the organisation.

Licensing

All those serving alcohol must undertake Responsible Service of Alcohol training (addressed in the Training Package but subject to Licensing Authority restrictions on trainers and assessors). Employees must be at least 18 years of age to serve alcohol. For further information see the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.

There are no other licensing requirements that apply to the traineeships.

Availability of Registered Training Organisations

Training organisations registered to deliver training in New South Wales for qualifications from the SIR07 Retail Services Training Package are listed on National Training Information Service.

Woolworths Limited delivers qualifications from the Woolworths Training Package.
